They, as also Señor Limantour, ex Minister of Finance, all
expressed themselves in favour of the justice of the claim.
No progress, however, was made with the matter and at last
on March 8th of this year President Diaz informed the Con
pany that it was necessary that the case should be offi-
cially treated, when it would be carefully studied and de-
cided on in right.
The troubled political conditions of the Repub-
ilc then intervened and prevented any further progress be-
ing made, and I, meanwhile, was approached by the Company
with the request that the support of the Legution might be
afforded to them.
I lost no time in soliciting the instructions of
by Government, laying the entire antter before them, and I
have now been directed to inform you that His Majesty's Go-
vernment support the claim made by the Company, and I am to
suggest to the Mexican Government the avis.bility of up-
pointing a representative to discuss with a representative
of the Company the amount of the compensation which it
would be reasonablo for the Government to pay.
